ACT otherWISE – Energy Workshop

ENERGY SAVINGS WORKSHOP

An opportunity for members of the ACT otherWISE network.

This is the first of quarterly energy savings workshops to assist members of the ACT otherWISE network reduce their energy consumption in the home environment. Come along and leave equipped with more tools and knowledge, as you take individual and community actions towards a more sustainable ACT.

When: Thursday 8th November

Time: 6pm to 7.30pm

Where: The Conservation Council, 3 Childers Street (next to the Street Theatre)

Our lifestyles rely on energy. Whether it’s enjoying a cold drink, staying warm on a cold winter’s night, taking a hot shower, watching a movie…. So many of the activities we enjoy require energy. Recently we have come to realise that the way we generate this energy is really important. In Australia, most of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases. These in turn are contributing the climate change, which is already having major impacts on the environment-both natural and human built.

So, what to do? The workshop will provide information on how people typically use energy in the domestic setting and explore possible responses that we can take to have a positive effect on the climate change crisis.

Facilitated by Peter Miller from the Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT). HEAT is an ACT government funded service for all Canberra and area residents designed to help them reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Come along and learn simple things you can do at home to use less energy and save money.

We have limited spaces so please RSVP by 1st of November to.

Change the World in 5 Minutes

From: Heidi Lenffer [mailto:Heidi.Lenffer@ sbs.com.au]

I’m contacting you about a new project called Change the World in 5 Minutes, which is aimed at people who want to do just that!

Change the World (www.sbs.com.au/changetheworld) will feature nine short films based on the book ‘Change the World for 10 Bucks’, all aimed at inspiring a global conversation for change.

And we’d like your help.

We’re building an online community of people with ideas who want to make a change for the good.

Visitors can create profile pages and engage and interact with other users by uploading photos and videos, sharing “good news” articles, playing games and quizzes, as well as rating content that other people publish.

It could be an invention, an idea or a flash-mob for global change, plus we’ve got a $3000 ethical investment portfolio to give away for someone to really put their money where their (ethical) mouth is. The competition is only open to Australians and ends in 3 weeks, so i hope you can encourage people to get involved!

Regards,

Heidi Lenffer

Introducing Rachael Millsom

To the otherWISE network,

I am writing to introduce myself as the new Project officer for the ACT otherWISE project.  I am replacing Julia Collin; however Julia will be around until the end of the year to assist with the project, which will ensure a smooth handover.

Please note our new email address and update your records accordingly: otherwise@consact.org.au.

In this email I will tell you a little bit about myself, what we are planning for the rest of this year.

I little about myself.  I have recently moved to Canberra from Melbourne and I love the open space that Canberra offers.  Being someone that loves outdoor activities, including hiking skiing, riding and climbing, Canberra suits me well.

I completed a Bachelor of Science (Environmental) with honours in 1999. Since this time:

*       I have worked for Outward Bound Australia as a leader of outdoor education courses for young people, during my time at Outward Bound I also completed a certificate IV in outdoor recreation;

*       I commenced work for GHD (www.ghd.com.au), a professional services company, as an environmental scientist.  I have primarily worked in the areas relating to soil and water assessment.  I am currently working for GHD 3 days a week;

*       I Completed a Diploma in Mediation Teaching with the Inner Peace Institute http://www.innerpeace.com.au/; and

*       I became a facilitator for a workshop entitled In-Tuition and Purpose which I co facilitate approximately 3 times a year in Melbourne, through Inner Peace.

I am committed to making changes in my own life that lead to a more sustainable lifestyle.   I love riding my bike around Canberra and spending time in the garden.  I also love working with people and inspiring them to make changes in their own lives and to plan for their futures.  So I am excited to be taking on the position as Project  Officer for the ACT otherWISE project.

This Year: The plan for the rest of this year is to run a facilitator training workshop and two youth workshops.  It is likely that one of these workshops will be at a school and the other will be an open public workshop. Hopefully we will get those involved in the facilitator training to help out at these workshops.  We will also get up and running regular catch-ups / activities for ACT otherWISE members.

I look forward to being in touch with all of you. Please contact me if you have any questions, or any ideas for the project, especially relating to our workshops that we are planning for the rest of this year.  Alternatively if you do not wish to receive any further updates, please let me know and I will remove you from out list.

Sincerely

Rachael Millsom
